Object description :

""aftafa" Ewer, Eastern Persia, Tin-plated Brass Engraved All Sides, 19th Century, Eastern Iran"
Ewer "called "Aftafa", in formerly tinned brass, decorated on all sides with interlacing, friezes, stylized flowers, numerous tribal motifs and scenes from princely life.
Engraved on both sides of the medallions (photos):
# of a scene, of a horseman armed with a lance chasing the wolf
# of a scene, of a believer attacking a man armed with a dagger, surrounded by animals
# of two scenes, from princely life in Persia.
Our model comes from the North-West of Persia, Eastern Iran, Azerbaijan.
A bronze handle cast in Esse, beautiful engravings and a patina due to time underline this admirable object.
The dominic-shaped stopper supports a smooth fretel ending in a point.
Note the numerous facets shaped like scales constituting the neck and the re-engraved facets of stylized flowers for the pouring board.
The presence of numerous birds, interlacing roses and ivy, Persian scenes of life, hares, symbol of the believer, adorn these magnificent objects ....
Very beautiful water outlet in the shape of a four-pointed star.
This ewer presents a very particular interest in its decoration.
The Aftafa ewers or jugs were and still are today, mainly used for ablutions, washing the face and hands, at the time of religious ceremonies.
"The feast of the initiates, standing ready to serve, the beauties from all sides hold the ewer in their hands; the times of love wash their hands with all their soul; while the beauties pour the water, the ewer in their hands "
Reading and translation, AS Melikian-Chirvani, 1973 p 119. from the 19th century and in very good condition.
The ewers are emblematic and are among the most beautiful objects of ancient oriental art, they are all different because all special orders.
