We are faced with one of the most successful themes of seventeenth-century painting: philosophers. Representing the scientists of antiquity as figures of great wisdom and authority, a symbol of knowledge and in this case the figure of Archimedes stands almost complete, thus expressing maximum authority and with full symbolic force shows the compass while placing it on the globe. Oil painting on canvas for which a Flemish origin of the author is not excluded even if equally clear is a component of german tradition. Dating back to the 18th century, the oil painting on canvas has some minimal defects and few pictorial restorations, and certainly needs cleaning for better readability of the work which is of evident pictorial quality.
