Animated Ruins
Drawing, Pen and brown ink, gray wash on paper
French school of the 18th century, attributable to Hubert Robert Annotated at the bottom “Robert 1786”
Dimensions at sight: 12 x 11.5 cm Dimensions with frame: 24.5 x 22 cm
Charming drawing representing a landscape of animated ruins, characteristic of the 18th century taste for architectural whims and ancient remains. The balance of the composition, the finesse of the line and the subtle use of wash evoke the style of Hubert Robert (1733-1808), although the attribution cannot be formally confirmed. The work depicts figures evolving in a monumental setting inspired by Antiquity, where Corinthian columns and ruined sculptures interact with the invasive vegetation. The annotation “Robert 1786” raises the question of a possible attribution, requiring in-depth expertise.
Slightly faded paper.
Gilded frame in good condition.
