"Mali Face Mask, Early To Mid-20th Century"
African carved wooden helmet, attributable to the Marka (or Bamana) ethnic group of Mali. This type of mask, often used in initiation ceremonies or rites of passage, has a slender structure with a face with angular features and a headdress topped with geometric elements. The incised decorations and matte patina suggest a traditional sculpture, intended for ritual use. The upper part decorated with a crescent motif is a distinctive element found in Bamana art, often associated with fertility rites, protection or secret societies such as the Komo.
