Provenance
This illustration sheet is similar to the one found in "Costumes de Théâtre, Ballets et Divertissements" printed in 1921 in Paris. This portfolio contains 21 sheets by G. Lepape, colored with a stencil. This work was printed in a very small number of copies and very few have reached us. It is possible that a copy of this portfolio was dismantled in 1930, when our sheet was first framed. This sheet was cleaned and reframed before being offered to you today.
The artist
Georges Lepape (1887-1971) was a French illustrator and fashion designer, an iconic figure of Art Deco. Born in Paris, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he developed a refined and elegant style, influenced by Orientalism and the modernist movements of his time.
In 1911, he collaborated with the couturier Paul Poiret to illustrate the album "Les Choses de Poiret", marking the beginning of a flourishing career in the world of fashion. His drawings, characterized by fluid lines and subtle colors, quickly seduced the greatest fashion houses and prestigious magazines.
He worked for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Vanity Fair, bringing a touch of sophistication and lightness to his covers and illustrations. His works are distinguished by slender silhouettes and harmonious compositions, capturing the elegance of the era with a unique sensibility.
In addition to his work in fashion, Lepape created posters and theater sets, and collaborated with luxury brands such as Hermès. His influence continues today, embodying the golden age of fashion illustration and the timeless chic of Art Deco.
