The oval box has the distinctive feature of having two compartments, opening with double hinges: the main compartment occupies the body of the box; the second is within the thickness of the lid.
The box is in the neo-Louis XV style with a large stylized shell on the lid and a frieze of scrolls and flowers on the edge of the "main" lid.
These rocaille elements are tempered by taut overall lines and a series of vertical lines on the body of the box, which are typical of Art Deco.
The interior of the box is silver-gilt.
The box is hallmarked:
. Minerva 1st grade, before 1973
. Goldsmith's hallmark: AC with a Legion of Honor and a crescent for Marie-Amélie Cardeilhac, active from 1904 to 1920.
In full: Cardeilhac // Paris
Marie-Amélie Cardeilhac is the widow of Ernest Cardeilhac, himself the grandson of the founder of the house, Antoine-Vital Cardeilhac. She took over the house upon her husband's death in 1904 and passed it on to her sons in 1920.
Superb snuffbox, very interesting for its blend of Louis XV and Art Deco styles and its double-compartment configuration. Made by one of the greatest French goldsmiths, its craftsmanship and substantial weight attest to this for an object of this size.
