A very beautiful oil painting on canvas from the 17th century, an oval portrait of Philip V of Spain (1683-1746).
This late 17th-century portrait is closely related to the works from the workshops of the painter Pierre Gobert (1662-1744).
King Philip V is dressed in a ermine cloak, a symbol of royalty, wearing a rigid white Spanish collar, as well as the blue sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit and the necklace of the Order of the Golden Fleece of the Habsburgs.
The oval portrait is in very good condition.
Some small touch-ups, almost invisible to the naked eye, are to be noted; the colors are fresh, giving it a perfect state.
The canvas was previously mounted on cardboard.
It is sold with its original carved wooden frame. A small loss on the left side is to be noted.

Philip V of Spain (1683-1746)
Philip V of Spain (1683-1746) was the first king of the Bourbon dynasty in Spain, reigning from 1700 until his death in 1746. He was the grandson of Louis XIV of France, heir to the Spanish throne through his mother, Marie-Thérèse of Austria, daughter of Philip IV of Spain.
His ascension to the Spanish throne marked the beginning of the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714), a major conflict between several European powers, mainly France and Austria, to determine who would succeed Charles II of Spain, who died without an heir. After a long war, Philip V was recognized as king of Spain in 1714, but he had to renounce certain Spanish territories in Europe in favor of other powers.
His reign was marked by administrative reforms, including the centralization of power in Spain and the creation of a more efficient administration. He implemented new laws and institutions to modernize the kingdom, but his authoritarian rule, costly wars, and economic difficulties made his reign tumultuous.
Philip V married Marie-Louise-Gabrielle of Savoy (who died in 1714) in his first marriage, and in his second marriage, he wed Elisabeth Farnese, a union that strengthened the Bourbon family's position in Europe. Together, they had several children, including Ferdinand VI, who succeeded him on the throne.
Philip V abdicated once in 1724 in favor of his son Louis, but after the premature death of the latter, he regained the throne and continued his reign until his death in 1746.
He was a complex monarch, both a reformer and authoritarian, and his reign marked the enduring establishment of the Bourbon dynasty in Spain.
