"A Louis XV Rocaille Console Mid 18th Century Circa 1750-1760"
An applique Rocaille console in carved limewood, gilded in burnished leaf and with a matt finish, with a curved scrolled form and strong overhangs on all sides. The belt is made of curves and counter-curves treated with openwork. It rests on a two-legged base with double inverted curves and scrolls, joined by an equally openwork spacer. The whole is harmoniously joined by fine, high-relief carvings of rocaille, nestling budded roses and garlands in opulent, high-relief, clire-voie foliage. The middle part of the apron is adorned with a poly-lobed cartouche where rosebuds unite on a bed of foliage. The whole is topped with a sheet of vintage De Luna marble from Carrara*, with a dense blue-grey veining that is highly decorative and harmonious. It's worth noting the great care taken with the flawless quality of the connecting elements. Balance, responsiveness, elegance and quality are the most appropriate terms to describe this beautiful Provençal console. The distinctive workmanship of Provençal master sculptors gives this console all its letters of nobility, combining the exuberance of the South with the theatrical taste of Italian magnificence.
Marble dimensions Width 100.3cm, Depth 49.7cm, Height 84.8cm.

*Luna marble is one of the most prized for its whiteness without excessive veining. It has been quarried in the Apuan Alps in the Carrara region of Tuscany since ancient times. In the days of Louis XIV, blocks of Luna arrived in France via the Rhône. The blocks were transhipped at Arles. In Lyon, they were taken up the Saône, then the canals, and reached Paris and Versailles via the Seine: the journey sometimes took two years.
