It comes from Greece and dates from the second half of the 17th century -- around 1680/1700.
Saint Anthony the Great was born in Egypt (251-356) and is considered the founder of Christian monasticism.
In Byzantine style, this icon is very finely made in tempera (paint based on natural pigments and egg yolk) on a gold leaf (gilded) background. The chromatic range is rich and warm .
Saint Anthony, dressed as a monk, is represented in bust, holding in his right hand the holy cross and in the other a scroll which reads “I saw the snares of the Devil spread on the earth.”
Very good general condition of conservation. The wooden panel is structurally sound. Minor cracks. Some wear and tear to the gilding and the paint layer which are consistent with the age of the work.
This icon is sold with its certificate of authenticity and a full description of the work.
