HSP Impressionist Normandy Market 1897 Terrick John Williams ? LIS25HSP001Oil on panel depicting a fairground scene near a Normandy market hall. The scene clearly evokes a lively rural fair or market, with numerous silhouettes, many women in headdresses or hats. With characters in blaudes and blue caps typical of the Pays d'Auge. A large village in the Pays d'Auge, fair or market day, a rare work, perhaps by Terrick John Williams (1860 - 1936) The work bears a signature, apparently in three letters, at the bottom left, difficult to decipher, see the photos. Probably a stylized monogram, with intertwined letters (which was common at that time), the hypothesis of a signature with the intertwined letters TJW for Terrick John Williams remains probable, but without certainty. On the back, mention of the date 1897 and number 74 Dimensions approximately 26.5 x 35 cm The painting, the texture, the colors are in very good condition, as well as the wooden support, a fairly thick tablet, without xylophagous traces ... The style is post-impressionist, with quick and thick brushstrokes, visible especially in the human figures and the textures of the building, the painter is fast, skillful, efficient and experienced... A palette rich in warm colors (ochres, reds, yellows), a very free treatment of forms, sometimes almost sketched, which evokes more the capture of an atmosphere than the precision of the detail. With such generous pictorial material. The style is reminiscent of the Rouen School, a regional post-impressionist movement active in the late 19th century, such as Charles Frechon, Joseph Delattre, Robert Antoine Pinchon, Léon-Jules Lemaître and Albert Lebourg, but the painting is more likely to be a work by Terrick John Williams (1860 - 1936). The arcaded building is typical of market squares in Normandy (e.g. Lyons-la-Forêt, Pont-Audemer, or even Veules-les-Roses or Neufchâtel-en-Bray). The building has two massive stone arches, typical of traditional covered markets or halls. The upper floor shows a single vertical opening, probably an attic bay (often used in storage buildings or markets for ventilation or unloading). This type of stone building with low arches is characteristic of market halls or rural local fairs built in the 17th-19th centuries but still very active at the end of the 19th century. The architecture is Norman vernacular, possibly in a small town or a large village (comparable examples: halls of Lyons-la-Forêt, Beuvron-en-Auge, Pont-l'Évêque, Bayeux, Dives-sur-Mer, Orbec, etc.). On the right, we see a structure with exposed wooden frames, mounted on a half-truss, an extension of a hall, under which a crowd is sitting at tables.
