Beautiful limestone STATUE in Italian Gothic style representing Saint Zacharias standing, holding censer and leafy branch. Height: 64 cm.
ITALY (?), 19th century.

Very beautiful quality of sculpture with drapery and accessories of great finesse, in perfect condition.
Zacharias was the father of Saint John the Baptist and the husband of Saint Elizabeth. A priest, it was while he was carrying out his service that the angel Gabriel came to tell him that he could finally have the long-awaited child. Zacharie doubts it so much because of his great age that he became mute until the day of Jean-Baptiste's birth.
