The cod fishermen at work with the houses of the Croisic quays in the background. Here the painter has chosen an almost square format where a sky larger than life occupies a little more than half of the canvas. These sailors are as if crushed by the latter. As if the painter had wanted to show us the importance of the elements with which these seafarers must deal. We feel that it has rained, because on the ground we notice a few puddles of water. It is the arrival of the blue sky after the rain. Dimensions: Height 46 cm and Width 54 cm.
Maurice Moy (1883 - 1945):
Maurice Moy is a painter from Rennes, a former student of the École des Beaux-Arts in Rennes. He painted his hometown, but also all of Brittany, with numerous seascapes. He also produced some paintings on southern Algeria and Tunisia. A contemporary of Mathurin Méheut, he achieved neither the latter's output nor his fame, although he had a comparable vigor of style. He also occasionally dabbled in Cubism. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1923. An article in Ouest Éclair from 1925 described him as "The painter of skies that have nothing conventional about them," a perfectly apt description of the work we are presenting.
