Object description :

"Important Representation Of The Holy Shroud Of Besançon - 17th/18th Century"
Louis XIV period, in its carved wooden frame from the same period. In addition to the classic representation of these Holy Shrouds with the three bishops traditionally positioned in front of the shroud, there is a fine floral decoration as well as a rare medallion of an angel at the foot of the Cross, recovering this shroud.
We have here a great work of polychrome embroidery threaded with gold on a cream-colored satin background. The faces of the mitred bishop and the two canons are of rare finesse.
Our three characters hold the shroud of the Passion. The history of the Holy Shroud of Besançon is fascinating.
From 1517 until the Revolution when it mysteriously disappeared, it was the object of great veneration and spectacular devotions.

Used condition for this piece from the second half of the 17th or very early 18th century with wear and moisture stains. Dimensions of 56 cm by 49 cm with the frame.
Dimensions, at sight, excluding frame of 44.5 cm by 37
