Amazing Mandingo saber - West Africa, Senegal, border regions, 19th century Saber which takes the form and construction of traditional Mandingo sabers but which differs however by the decoration of the handle; Handle covered with leather, decorated with upholsterer's nails and brass and copper wire. Blade of local forge of poor quality. Leather scabbard. A very unique saber, probably a weapon of great prestige for its original owner. The brass wire of the handle is loose in places.
