Oil on panel "the Château d'If seen from the coast" signed lower right Ch. Guilbert d'Anelle. French school. 40 X 52.4 cm. Bears on the back an inscription specifying that the painting was offered by Bédoiseau (Vitraux Artistiques) Avignon. Successor and relative of Guilbert d'Anelle. Charles-Michel Guilbert d'Anelle was born in Paris in 1820 and died in Avignon in 1889. He was a pupil of Paul Delaroche (1797-1856) and Horace Vernet (1789-1863). He sent portraits and some other subjects to the Salon, from 1845 to 1861. The Avignon Museum preserves his work: Napoleon III visiting the breach in the ramparts of Avignon during the floods of 1856. Sources: Bénézit dictionary of painters and sculptors.
