Barbedienne was originally from Calvados but moved to Paris at a young age to learn a trade. In 1834, he met Achille Collas, who had developed a process for reducing and reproducing a sculpture or bas-relief proportionally. Together, they founded a company to exploit this patented process, which became world-renowned during the 19th century. The company contributed, among other things, to the dissemination and promotion of the works of Antoine-Louis Barye and Auguste Rodin.
