Avant-Garde work illustrating the Misery of the Humble in Flanders, a theme that would be widely taken up a little later by artists such as Kurt Peiser.
Charles Goethals, 1853-1885, Belgian painter. He is the son of Bernard Jacques Goethals, a decorative painter from Bruges. He is a landscape painter and also excels in genre scenes and portraits. He attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels from 1873 to 1877, then perfected his skills in decorative arts for four years in Paris with the painter Pierre-Victor Galland and also, around 1878-1880, in Italy, where the Belgian government sent him on two missions. Close to the L'Essor circle created in 1876, Charles Goethals exhibited for the first time in 1877-1878. He sold a painting to King Leopold II there in January 1878. He was one of the co-founders of the Brussels avant-garde group Le groupe des XX in 1883. He was also president of the short-lived Cercle des aquarellistes et des aquatistes belges created in August 1883 and dissolved a few months later. First president of the circle Les Hydrophiles, he participated in the first and only exhibition. He resigned at the beginning of November 1884, probably for health reasons. Leopold Speekaert succeeded him as president of the artistic association. In 1883, he refused to become a professor at the School of Decorative Arts in Amsterdam, preferring to remain in Belgium. He spent some time in Knokke to work on his art. However, he contracted a chest illness in the dunes that struck him in early 1884. Gradually, his strength declined, and his weakness prevented him from continuing his work. Charles Goethals died unmarried at the age of 32, after eighteen months of illness, at his home at 23 rue de Rome in Saint-Gilles. His premature death put an end to the promising career of this painter who practiced traditional outdoor realist painting. As a landscape painter, he was particularly inspired by the Dutch painter Jozef Israëls. He also excelled in genre scenes and portraits. In his later years, his melancholic and taciturn nature led him to depict the humble and the neglected, in paintings such as Le Viatique or La Laceliere. The Museum of Fine Arts in Tournai presents some of his works. Artist listed in Bénézit, Arto and Piron, Coté Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc...
