"Curiosity, Devil – Occultism – Engraved Skullcap – Skull – Pentacle – Witchcraft Object"
Mid-19th century Europe – probably France or Germany Private collection, Auvergne - Haute-Loire Fragment of a human skullcap engraved with an esoteric pentacle, used in a ritual or occult context. The bone, from an ancient anatomical preparation, bears traces of Latin phrases in barely visible ink. In my opinion, it was reinvested by ceremonial magic practices, in the tradition of post-medieval European grimoires. The main symbol is an inverted pentagram, surrounded by magical inscriptions, repeating the cabalistic alphabet used in circles of black magic or conjuration. This type of seal is directly inspired by the traditions of goetia (Lemegeton, Clavicula Salomonis), where the pentacle is used for the invocation, protection or control of spirits. This graphic design is not decorative: it is operative, and intended as such, in my opinion. The cleanly cut skullcap could have served as a support for meditation or fixation in necromantic or sorcerer-type rituals. The interior of the bone reveals the parietal structure and organic patina of an ancient bone, with marks of oxidation, handling, and smoking. The worn contours, the honey tint, and the partial darkness of the encaustic give the whole a raw, silent, almost hypnotic presence. This type of object, rare on the market, is neither decorative nor theatrical: it is the tangible imprint of an archaic relationship with death, power, and the sacred. It is fully in keeping with the world of cabinets of curiosities, European magical practices, and collectible objects with a strong symbolic charge. Please note: this is a real human bone, sold solely for collection, study, or private exhibition purposes, in compliance with current legal practices.
