"Miniature After Greuze: "the Broken Jug""
Large format oval miniature painted in watercolor after the painting by Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1815): "The Broken Jug" which is in the Louvre Museum. A very young girl is represented standing near a fountain, her gaze lost, paralyzed. She holds a broken jug on one arm, carries a bouquet of flowers on her hip and her hands are crossed on her lower abdomen. This scene which could seem innocuous is not at all it has a hidden meaning: Innocence or virginity flown away. This theme is recurrent in the work of Greuze: "The Dead Bird" or "The Young Girl Weeping for Her Dead Bird" are part of it. The painter knew how to convey to us the distress of this young girl with her distraught face. The miniature is in a beautifully chiseled gilt bronze frame; it is protected by curved glass. The reverse is trimmed with crimson silk. Presence of a ring of suspension.13 X 10cmGood condition.
