"Virgin And Child In Natural Wood, 17th Century, France "
Very beautiful carved wooden Virgin from the early 17th century. She holds the baby Jesus in her arms. The Virgin is dressed in a large veil worn on her head and a thick tunic. The quality of execution of the face of the Virgin and the baby Jesus, while remaining hieratic, proves to us that the latter was probably made early in the 17th century. The curls of Jesus' hair relate to Parisian productions in the early 1630s-1640s. Note the lacks, at the foot, the left hand of Christ and some of the Virgin's fingers. I draw attention to the top of the Virgin's head of a hole, formerly used to place a crown there. The patina of the whole is in very good condition, restored, the Virgin is presented on a small wooden base gilded with red velvet.
