A fine pair of Japanese baluster-shaped vases with flared necks, richly decorated in polychrome enamels and gilding on porcelain. Each vase features two large, opposing figural reserves, depicting lively court scenes with figures in traditional costumes, within a refined architectural setting.
The figures are finely drawn, the expressions delicate, and the fabrics richly detailed. The flared neck, with its scalloped edge, is decorated with stylized fish among red foliage on a black background speckled with white, giving the whole a striking decorative effect. Dragons, clouds and stylized floral motifs complete the composition with great visual richness.
The vases rest on chiseled and openwork metal bases, with plant decoration, which show them off well.
Japanese work from the end of the 19th century, Meiji period (1868–1912), intended for the export market.
