"Carved Wooden Distaff. Folk Art."
Beautiful finely carved wooden distaff from the late 19th or early 20th century. The distaff is used to hold and store wool, linen, hemp fibers that are not yet spun so that they do not get tangled and are easy to use. The simplest form is a wooden branch on which the fibers are wound and held in place with a ribbon. In other cases, the wood or wicker will be split into four to form a cage that will contain the material. As always in everyday objects, some can be abundantly decorated, especially when the object is offered by the fiancé to his bride. The distaff is used both with a spinning wheel, it is then placed very close to the spool, and with a spindle, in which case it is held under one arm slipped under the belt and the spindle is held with the other hand. Good condition. Length 84.5 cm.
