GASPARD-MAILLOL – Women. Album of woodcuts by Gaspard-Maillol. Preface by RENÉ-JEAN.
Paris, Éditions d’Art “La Cible” J. Povolovzky & Cie publisher, sd (Printed in Le Mans, by R.-N. Raimbault on hand presses, 1920 for the text and Ch. Monnoyer for the cover), 1 large folio album (550 x 370 mm) in sheets under illustrated strong paper cover, of (1) f. (dedication and justification), 1 notebook of 4 pp. illustrated with 8 woodcuts for the preface by RENÉ-JEAN, and 12 woodcut plates.
Slight discreet stains on the cover, otherwise a perfect copy.
Strictly limited edition of 55 copies signed on the justification by Gaspard-Maillol; this one 1 of 25 on pure rag paper (N°XLVI).
Paper made by the artist with the monogram MT, corresponding to his second factory. 1 illustration on the cover, 8 woodcuts in the text for the preface and 12 plates outside the text by Gaspard-Maillol. Woodcut vignette (publisher's mark) on the back cover. Text of the justification: "This Album was printed in Le Mans, on a hand press, by the engraver RN Raimbault… and the Cover by Ch. Monnoyer printer. The work was printed, on the Papiers de Montval by vat and by form, from the factories of Pierre Térouanne and Gaspard-Maillol…".
A handwritten note from the artist inserted in another copy that was put up for sale states precisely: "... The engravings are my very first engravings executed in Marly-le-Roi from 1910 to 1914. This album was to be published in 1914. The war prevented its publication, and it could only be published in Le Mans, after having reconstituted my small paper factory in Montval in this town. This is why the sheets of this album are watermarked MT (2nd factory)."
Rare and very spectacular.
