Celtic stone head on stand. The face is carved on one side of the four-sided stone and has two round, bulbous eyes. The nose is broad and lentoid. The mouth is a downward slit, perhaps with a moustache above and a chin below. The cheeks are slightly hollowed, and the upper lip is depressed. This Celtic Iron Age head features a face with a fixed, haunting gaze. It could be a representation of one of several known Celtic proto-deities. Found in an area of a known Celtic village or farmstead in eastern England, among other examples lining a riverbed. Beautiful and crude. Circa 500 BC, England.
