"Louis XV Period Sofa With Cane Base, Lyonnais Work Attributed To Pierre Nogaret."
This large sofa is a quality seat as evidenced by the balance of shapes and care taken in the carving work, large in size and unmodified, this 3-seater known as "triple evolutions" is a Lyon work from the Louis XV period. Constructed from walnut and beech wood, the woods have their original ochre-colored finishes. This sofa rests on 8 legs, it has a base that is found in Lyon on armchairs with a flat back with a long carved water leaf for the front legs and an equivalent simplified model for the back legs. The backrest divided into three parts, fretted in a donkey's back, is carved with flowers and foliage of different sizes and in different positions on rocaille-style backgrounds, this distribution is found in the front seat crosspieces in a balanced way, which is a habit of Pierre Nogaret. The armrest consoles are said to be simple bilobed without volutes, this model is found on flat backs at Lyon seat joiners such as Canoe, it is also found at Nogaret but more rarely. The side seat crosspieces have a triangular-shaped "lug", this "appendix" is considered "exclusive to Nogaret", this characteristic feature is assimilated as "a signature by the decoration" in the reference works on Nogaret. Another characteristic point that we find on Lyonnais sofas, the intermediate uprights of the back are curved, this cutting carried out by the carpenter is found in particular on a sofa preserved in the collections of the Camondo Museum which is part of a living room set including a sofa and 14 armchairs by Pierre Nogaret. It should also be noted that the flat-backed armchairs in this Nogaret-stamped set also feature bilobed armrest consoles like those found on our sofa. Due to these technical and aesthetic characteristics, this sofa can be attributed to Pierre Nogaret. There is some wear on the feet at the level of the caps, the canes are in good condition, note a small tear on the backrest, the seat is upholstered with a thick cushion with petit point tapestry. The structure is in very good condition, this seat can be used. The ochre finish shows some wear and is patinated.
