"Luigi Rossini, View Of The Temple Of Antoninus And Faustina, Romanesque Antichità, Intaglio, 1821"
Beautiful intaglio print from Rossini's Antichità Romane series, a collection of 101 etchings published in Rome in 1823. The letter of the print indicates various information: "Rossini dis. et inc." [Rossini draftsman and engraver], "Roma 1821", and small numbered descriptions corresponding to the monuments visible in the image. In the foreground, it is the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina built in the 2nd century AD by Antoninus Pius in honor of his deified wife Faustina, still visible today in the Roman Forum. Interesting details of the reliefs of the marble frieze, taking up motifs of stylized foliage and griffins, attesting to the imperial taste for oriental iconography, already prevalent under Augustus. In the background, the Capitol which still overlooks the remains of the forum. Good general condition; some foxing is noted. Good quality frame, which has the merit of elegance and simplicity. Please note: the glass is missing. Dimensions: 66 x 56.5 cm Overall 45.5 x 36.5 cm On view
