Preparatory study for the figure in the background of one of the wall panels commissioned by the State from Cormon in 1893 to decorate the paleontology amphitheater of the Natural History Museum of Paris. The theme chosen for the whole is that of the evolution of man from prehistory to the Iron Age. The panels are still there today and the sketches are kept at the Petit Palais (In particular the one for the pottery INV. PDUT1391).
