Studies of arms and feet Black
pencil on paper
Brand P. Borel (Lugt n°4824)
33 x 22 cm
This study of arms and feet in black pencil was made for one of the two paintings representing Baptism installed in the parish church of Saint-Héand (Loire) and in the church of Saint-Irénée in Lyon (Rhône).
Indeed, the arm holding a sword in such a particular way allows us to link this drawing to the preparatory studies for these two canvases.
Paul Borel painted a large part of his life for the churches and convents of the Lyon region.
He delivered two sets of decorations for the basilica of Ars sur Formans (Cycle of the martyrdom of Saint Philomène (1867) and a series of four marouflaged canvases on the life of the Curé of Ars (around 1900).
His aspiration to religious life among the Dominicans not having found its fulfillment, he will remain very close to the order cultivating his friendships with several members of the Order and by offering a chapel that he will decorate for their teaching institution of Oullins (Rhône), to this day his most complete artistic achievement in terms of painting of a religious nature.
