"19th Century Ink Drawing, View Of Hyères "
The sheet we are presenting is certainly the work of a traveling painter going to Rome, in the first half of the 19th century. Indeed Hyeres is a stage on the long, often chaotic journey that awaits our artists. The sustained quality of the work, the finesse of the details, and in particular the technique of creating perspectives by lightening the line, for the distant parts of the landscape, are reminiscent of the works of Achille Etna Michallon (1796-1822) The date 1832, on the copper plate, and the quality of the paper, suggest that it could be one of his students. Also, although still anonymous, this drawing deserves our full attention. It is now framed with a baguette from the same period in solid mahogany on a sole which harmonizes with the nuances of the ink. Dimensions of the sheet at sight: 23.5 cm x 18 cm
