"Arte Di Tarsia Rolo Inlaid Walnut Table"
Guéridon table with rectangular walnut top decorated with rich marquetry and canted corners. The top depicts a mythological scene in which a goddess drives her chariot pulled by two horses (possibly Diana on her chariot). The scene is doubly framed by uninterrupted series of volutes ending with stylized and langued heads as well as a succession of very beautiful geometric motifs. The outer edges as well as the legs are also marquetry. This table rests on a generously turned and molded central shaft, finished with four cut legs. Designed in the Restoration style, they are largely offset, thus guaranteeing perfect stability of the whole. Also note their composition in solid walnut, compared to other furniture of this period more commonly equipped with veneer legs. The top is retractable by a wooden pull system. It can thus be presented as a marquetry painting. The table is a remarkable and unequalled testimony to the Arte di Tarsia in Rolo, Italy, the know-how of generations of artists and craftsmen known for the extreme finesse of the marquetry used. A museum in Italy is dedicated to this art. The table dates from around the 1820s. It was revised by a cabinetmaker MOF in 2023.
