Rare golden-gilded and finely engraved ciborium, Italy, 16th century

The foot is scalloped and molded, decorated with engraved foliage scrolls. The stem with a knop features a frieze of gadroons. The host box is smooth and hammered. The gilding on the interior of the cup is very well preserved. The lid is adorned with a frieze of volutes and scrolls and is topped with a cross (later).
Note that the "closing" mechanism is missing.
