Stamp 'Manifattura Fornaci S. Lorenzo' at lower right.
On the verso in the upper center it bears the inscription: 'Bozzetto preparatorio Manifattura Chini - vetrata San Giorgio a cavallo'
The subject of the preparatory study for this stained-glass window is Saint George in his classic iconography of the clash with the monstrous dragon. A subject already taken up by such famous artists as Raphael and Gustave Moreau, Chini himself also used this subject in several of his works; for his most famous wall painting in the former Palazzo Pecori Giraldi now Museo Chini St. George and the Princess, for a stained-glass window now located in an unknown place Stained-glass window with St. George with the Madonna and Magdalene on either side (of which there is photographic evidence in the Galileo Chini works repertory) and for a polychrome ceramic lunette St. George located in Viareggio.
The perfect condition, stylistic precision, subject matter and completeness of execution make the watercolor undoubtedly unique in the artist's market.
