Henri Malançon was born into a wealthy and cultured family of the Parisian bourgeoisie. Malançon married the painter Antoinette Destrem (1881-1942) in 1925. After his military service, in 1903, he entered the Académie Julian, where he began his apprenticeship in painting. He stayed there for two years and became friends with Yves Alix, Pierre Bompard, the sculptor Vigoureux, Maurice Savin, Jean Souverbie, Georges Braque, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Frédéric Deshayes, La Fresnaye, Legueult, and André Lhote. On Braque's advice, he continued his training from 1905 to 1914 at the Académie Humbert. It was after the Great War, during which he was mobilized, that Malançon began his career as a painter. He then made a habit of staying in chosen regions whose landscapes were, for him, sources of inspiration. He first chose Brittany and Normandy. From 1926, Malançon exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automne. Malançon often left Paris, where he lived at 80, rue Pierre-Demours, to travel around France. He painted in Céret, Saint-Tropez, Carnac (where Bompard joined him), Pont-l'Abbé, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Gargilesse in the Creuse. Affected by Antoinette's death, Malançon hardly painted during the 1940s. However, he became a renowned painter, collected by amateurs and also working for public commissions.
