The secrets of Murano glass: historical know-how The history of Murano glass begins in Italy around the 8th century. Although legend gives it earlier origins from Egypt, many glassmakers practiced this refined art on the island of Venice itself. This craft contributed to the city's reputation. But the reputation of Murano glass changed sides in 1201! Due to the numerous fires caused by the glassworks' furnaces, the Senate decided to settle all glass artisans on the famous island of Murano. As a result, hundreds of workshops were established, each promoting a unique skill. The artisans carefully guarded the secret of the practice, passing it on only to their descendants. Glasswork, whose design was admired and highly envied, was finally considered an art and regulated from 1271. Placed under the control of the authorities of the Republic of Venice, artisans were required to have an official license. Design and transformation, meanwhile, were subject to the Mariegola (the regulation). This framed the rights and obligations imposed on glassmakers for production. Today, although renowned, Murano glass is an art that has become rarer. Hundreds of factories that once existed are now only about fifteen on the island. But that's not the only change! More than 300 different colors were used at the time, while today there are only about sixty. Fortunately, in memory of this tradition, the Murano Glass Museum (located on the island) holds a collection of 4,000 pieces created since the beginning of the glassmakers' history.
