The box is round and made of brown tortoiseshell.
The lid is decorated with a miniature depicting a woman's bust. She looks at the viewer, slightly sideways. She wears a low-cut blue dress and her hair is tied with a ribbon that lets beautiful curls fall over her shoulders. She has a frank gaze and a hint of a smile.
The miniature is of high quality, very finely executed.
The miniature is enhanced by a slightly pinkish metal rim.
This is probably a silver alloy containing a small amount of gold.
A label identifies the woman portrayed as "Countess of Bordeaux, née D. d'Archiac." I have found no trace of a Countess of Bordeaux, but it may have been Jeanne Bernardine Desmier D'Archiac de Saint-Simon, born in 1755. She married Jean-Jacques-Marie de Bordeaux de Bargeville in 1769. Although the latter was not a count, he is known for having built the superb Château du Buisson de May, in the Eure department.
A very pretty box decorated with a charming portrait, very well crafted by a talented miniaturist.
