"Ebony Panel Depicting The Last Supper, Circa 1600"
A beautiful small ebony panel from the early Dutch Golden Age (1588-1672). This panel depicts Christ and his disciples seated around a round table. On this table are bread, wine, and other foods such as lamb. Christ is depicted in the center. Johannes sits next to him. Christ has joined his hands in prayer. The apostles are watching him attentively. Where is Judas? The curtains in the background indicate that the scene takes place indoors. Images of the Last Supper are considered by Christians to be a prefiguration of the Eucharist. A beautiful original piece! An early ebony panel is special. The exotic wood was imported from Asia to the Netherlands by the VOC - Dutch East India Company - and incorporated into luxury goods, including furniture. Only for the richest!
