"Pair Of Small Fô Dogs"
Beautiful pair of small green and yellow colored fo dogs Made in the mid-20th century In perfect condition. Chinese fo dogs, despite their name, are actually mythical lions from Buddhist tradition. Introduced to China as spiritual guardians, they were often placed at the entrance to temples, palaces or tombs to protect against evil spirits. Their name comes from a Western confusion: not knowing lions, Europeans called them “dogs”, and “Fô” refers to Buddha. These statues always come in pairs: a male (with a ball) representing power, and a female (with a cub) symbolizing the protection of the family. Over time, these figures were reproduced in fine porcelain, becoming highly prized decorative objects. But beyond their aesthetics, fo dogs remain strong symbols of protection, balance and spirituality in Chinese culture.
