"Gouache On Vellum, 17th Century, St Louis In Prayer."
Beautiful gouache on vellum, probably representing the King of France, St Louis, kneeling before an altar, showing with his left hand the insignia of his earthly power, the crown and the fleur-de-lis staff, as well as the ceremonial cushion on which these regalia are usually placed. On the altar, the crown of thorns, the nails of the cross and a white cloth (the Holy Shroud?). In the clouds above the scene, three cherubs. In the background, armed men. Signed: Alvarez fecit. Gilded and carved wooden frame, some missing parts to the gilding, 17th century period. Wear to the gouache on the blue royal mantle, and on the ermine cape.
