He also pursued a career as a painter and met most of the great artists of the early 20th century. He became friends with Antoine Bourdelle and received advice from Auguste Renoir. In October 1928, he co-founded the Salon des vrais indépendants where he exhibited until the Second World War. He exhibited in Paris at the Salon d'hiver from 1937 to 1947. He sometimes returned to the South of France for long periods, notably in the post-war years in Marseille, and lived with his wife in Roquevaire in a former factory in the city between 1964 and 1978. There he became the dean of the painters of the Péano, a community of artists established in the Arcenaulx district of Marseille, including among others Pierre Ambrogiani, Antoine Ferrari, Antoine Gianelli, Jo Berto, René Seyssaud, Auguste Chabaud and Antoine Serra.
