In this very lively scene, we see many figures on the banks or in boats, a village on a hill, another that disappears into the distance. Clouds race across the vast sky, where we can also make out a few birds.
The work is signed Roeser lower left (difficult to read, see heavily lightened photo). It is in very good condition, clean. There are very slight outcrops of the wooden panel, without consequence on the overall quality of the work.
The painting is framed in a modern frame of the old type, in carved wood and painted in tortoiseshell style.
This is an early work by Matthias Roeser, a painter from eastern France in the 18th century. Roeser trained in Strasbourg with Loutherbourg, before becoming a restorer at the Louvre Museum. In this capacity, he restored several paintings by Rembrandt.
