Gallic Sculpture Celtic Votive Head In Limestone 2nd-3rd Bc Archaeology

Object description :

"Gallic Sculpture Celtic Votive Head In Limestone 2nd-3rd Bc Archaeology"
Large carved Celtic limestone votive head representing a high dignitary, probably a male warrior chief. He is depicted wearing a typical mustache, curled locks of hair and his mouth open as if in full speech. This type of representation is very rare among the Celts and developed at the end of the period from the 7th century BC under Greek and Germanic influence. Human representations were forbidden in Celtic iconography. We know of less than ten similar pieces and fewer of such an imposing size in the entire Celtic world, including one preserved in the National Museum of Prague. This work of Gallo-Celtic art was exhumed in the north of France on the border with Belgium. Dimensions 45 x 33 x 26 cm
