Léopold Survage, an "unclassifiable artist," is a major artist of the 20th century.
througout his life, Léopold Survage remained an unclassifiable artist, straddling Cubism and Surrealism, between figuration and abstraction. He rejected the pure Cubism of Braque and Picasso's still lifes and introduced architecture, landscapes, and always a character connected to their environment.
The figures are schematized and, most often, situated in an urban setting. In his colorful canvases, he abolished the rules of traditional perspective.
The painter was able to create a completely personal language to deliver his poetic vision of the universe, through metaphors and decipherable symbols.
