Johann Friedrich Engel is a German painter who also worked in the United States. He arrived in the United States with his parents in 1852, at the age of eight, and lived in Albany, New York. He was given his first painting lessons by a French painter established in the United States. He then returned to Germany and studied from 1861 at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts and, from January 18, 1862, in the antique class of the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich. After his studies, he returned to the United States and became a painter of portraits and genre scenes. In 1873, he decided to settle in his parents' country and settled in Munich. He painted a series of traditional Bavarian costumes and genre scenes. In 1910, he created three paintings allegorically representing the seasons.
