"Luigi Rossini, The Arch Of Drusus, From Antichità Romane, Intaglio, Rome, 1819"
Beautiful intaglio print from Rossini's Antichità Romane series, a collection of 101 etchings published in Rome in 1823. The letter of the print indicates various information: "Rossini dis. et inc." [Rossini draftsman and engraver], "Roma 1819", as well as a descriptive caption of the work: "Arco di Druso - Su del quale passava il condotto antoniano". The Arch of Drusus is an imperial period building erected in honor of Drusus, adopted son of Augustus, towards the end of the 1st century AD. Now gone, the monument depicted in the print (still existing, it spans the Via Appia) is in fact, despite its erroneous name, the remains of a vault that was part of an aqueduct - information known to Rossini who mentions this "condotto antoniano". Good general condition; some rare and discreet foxing is noted. Good quality frame, which has the merit of elegance and simplicity. Overall 65.5 x 46 cm Visible 45.5 x 35 cm
