"Surprise Snuffbox, Erotic, Circa 1820 "
Round snuffbox made of boiled cardboard with polychrome decoration. On the lid, a printed satirical scene entitled "Journal des Savans," depicting a peddler accompanied by his donkey in front of a tobacco shop. Inside, an erotic scene is hidden, revealed by lifting the lid: a couple embracing on a four-poster bed, in a theatrical red frame. This type of snuffbox, known as "surprise" or "double reading," was typically fashionable during the Restoration, mixing bawdy humor and social satire.
