"Christ In Boxwood - Italy - Late 15th, Early 16th Century - High Period"
This 27 cm boxwood sculpture, made in Northern Italy at the end of the 15th or very beginning of the 16th century, represents the suffering Christ with great expressiveness. The head tilted on the right shoulder, the half-closed eyes and the half-open mouth translate his last breath. A lock of hair rests on the shoulder adding a little softness to the expression. His slender body highlights precise anatomical work, with a short perizonium, finely draped around the hips. The slightly bent legs and the superimposed feet accentuate the dramatic tension of the scene. Despite the absence of his arms, this work remains a poignant testimony to Italian Religious Art of the late Middle Ages, combining realism and spiritual intensity.
