Tythological painting depicting puttis.
From an original by Correggio from 1531, commissioned by the Duke of Mantua, as one of a series depicting the loves of Jupiter. The painting depicts the Greek mythological figure Danae, daughter of Acrisius, king of Argos. An oracle having predicted that Acrisius would be killed by Danae's son, he had imprisoned his daughter in a bronze tower. However, according to the Roman poet Ovid in his Metamorphoses, Jupiter came to her in the form of a shower of gold and made her the mother of Perseus.
Correggio depicts Danae lying on a bed while a child Eros undresses her under showers of gold coming from a cloud.
At the foot of the bed, two putti are testing whether it is indeed gold.
