"Pair Of Carved Mother-of-pearl Plaques. Vietnam Or China, 19th Century."
These two thin mother-of-pearl plates are entirely carved over their entire surface with a multitude of characters and animals. These small sculptures must illustrate a moment in the history of Vietnam because if horsemen are at war on one of them on the other the characters live peacefully. On the back Chinese characters are roughly incised and seem to be information rather than artist signatures. Probably Vietnamese work from the 19th century or earlier but perhaps executed in southern China. 82mm x 64mm thickness 2mm
