"Amazing Yatagan Saber - Probably Black Sea Region, 15th-17th Century"
An astonishing yatagan saber - Probably Black Sea region, 15th-17th century Strong blade reminiscent of that of Ottoman yatagans. However, the double curvature of this one is clearly more pronounced than that of Ottoman examples and would be similar to the blades of Armenian yatagans or those of the Black Sea (sometimes referred to as "laz bishaq" - literally "knife of the Laz" in Turkish). On both sides of the blade is engraved a frieze of tulips close to the style found on Iznik ceramics or Safavid ceramics. Handle made of two riveted horn plates and a copper alloy bolster (the second bolster is missing). The shape of the handle is reminiscent of that of Kabyle sabers called "flissa". A very old saber which, without a similar example referenced, is difficult to place in time and space. However, following the above indications, we can move forward to locate it somewhere around the Black Sea around the 15th-17th centuries. Length 75cm Blade length 62cm Weight 962gr
