Object description :

"Pewter Wine Pitcher - Paris, 18th Century"

Beautiful pewter PITCHER, with shoulder, high plinth foot, straight goblet and thumb with molded crest.
Hallmarked:
1° - Gauging: arms of Paris / 1732.
2° - Control at the nave (poorly affixed).
3° - Hallmark of Pierre Servais CAGNY received master in 1784: hammer topped with a bird / (P).SC / P.
Height: 19.5 cm.
PARIS, End of the 18th century

Good condition, some scratches are noted.
Interesting example of the limited production of this master always of beautiful quality of material
Note that this vintage gauging 1732 is still used at the end of the century.
The purpose of the pitcher gauging check was to verify whether the pitcher complied with regulations and was suitable for service in order to ensure "Good measure" for the consumer.
It is not uncommon to find that, for example, the bottom could be forced and made concave by a consumer to slightly increase the capacity, or conversely made convex by the owner of the bar to reduce the capacity...
